You can begin HypnoBirthing at any time, but we recommend the best time to start is between 15 – 30 weeks. The earlier, the more time you have to practice the relaxation and to enjoy a more relaxed pregnancy.
If you start later, you will still benefit, ideally by completing the classes prior to giving birth.
It will help your birth companion to know what to do when you’re giving birth, as they will play a vital role during the birth, using the tools and techniques learned in the classes. As everyone has busy schedules, what has worked very well is that your partner attends the 4th class, if he can only make one.

You will be given the Marie Mongan’s HypnoBirthing® book, relaxation audio tracks, and handouts, plus ongoing support if required via phone and email until you start your birth.
Bring a pen and paper to take notes.
To maximize your comfort and ability to relax, please dress comfortably. You may bring along beanbags, extra cushions, pillows or a blanket if you desire.
During sessions we will take a short break. Please feel free to bring along snacks, or drinks (ie water bottle) if you would like to.
Please refrain from sharing horror birth stories or experiences as it will feed the negative energy and mindset that birth sometimes has. HypnoBirthing’s philosophy is to only discuss positive birth stories in the course.
No need. The HypnoBirthing course will provide you information about natural birth and give you tools and techniques to use in a natural drug-free birth with a brief overview of complications or interventions. Other ante-natal courses typically cover interventions and complications in depth.
Attending these classes may put your focus on the things which can lead to fear and may negate the learnings of the HypnoBirthing philosophy.
However, some courses focus more on how to care for your baby, which can be beneficial.
Absolutely! The tools and techniques you will learn in your HypnoBirthing course will be of use to you and your baby regardless of your birth experience. If medical intervention is required, you will find yourself better able to remain calm and in control. Moms who have needed caesareans for medical reasons report that they were totally relaxed before, during and after the procedure and feel their recovery was relatively quick.
Yes! Many women who’ve had a previous caesarean and are desiring a vaginal birth find the HypnoBirthing course very empowering and helpful in increasing their confidence levels. It’s also pleasing to hear that most of them do succeed in a natural delivery.
HypnoBirthing does not guarantee a birth free of pain, but many moms have reported having a relatively pain-free birth, or one that was easily manageable. When fear and tension constrict the birthing muscles, the body feels more pain. Mothers who are calm, relaxed and free of fear usually give birth in less time and much more comfortably, as they are producing more endorphins. HypnoBirthing moms may still experience sensations of tightening or pressure, but most describe their birth experience as working with their body through the sensations, therefore avoiding the excruciating pain that is frequently spoken of by other women.
I have had personal experience using HypnoBirthing techniques to give birth. Yes, I felt pressure and strong intense sensations. It was tough sometimes, but it was also extremely rewarding as I was relatively calm, focused and working with my body. I let my body and my baby do the job they’re designed to do. Because the training in HypnoBirthing was so powerful for me and those who have taken my course, I would love for each women to have this experience if they choose. Every woman deserves the opportunity to enjoy a positive birth experience.
